FROM WAIHEKE TO WELLINGTON
A storytelling adventure on two wheels
Project Overview
Storyteller, children’s author, arts educators and cycle enthusiast, Tanya Batt will undertake the cycle from Waiheke Island to Wellington on behalf of the Once Upon An Island Trust.
The cycle will take place during national cycle month, February 2011.The route will travel from Auckland down the west coast of the North Island through Raglan, Kawhia, Taranaki, Whanganui, the Manawatu and the Wairarapa, reaching Wellington on Friday 25th February.
Tanya will visit schools,libraries and pubic events along the way where she will share and collect stories about cycling using the Japanese Kamishibai – an illustrated form of storytelling which takes place off the back of a bike. The stories shared and collected will form the basis of a publication suitable for a primary aged audience. Rural schools will be specifically targeted.
Date
This will take place in February 2011 during Bike Wise month.
Aims
To raise awareness and promote cycling as both a recreational pastime and a viable means of transport for children to and from school.
Stories
The stories told by Tanya Batt will be especially selected and devised. They will be fun and educational, covering bike history, safety, inspirational cycling stories and pure fiction.
