Connecting through Story

In November 2011, The Once Upon An Island Trust facilitated an ‘island to island’ story exchange between the children of Waiheke Kindergarten and children of Ouecusse, East Timor. A group of Waiheke Kindergarten children drew story pictures about their life on our island which Tanya took with her to East Timor. While in Ouecusse she created a shadow puppet theatre from recycled materials and adapted the ‘Three Billy Goats Gruff’ into a Ouecusse ‘legend’ – featuring three goats, a crocodile and the local Bangla Bridge. The story was performed in a mixture of Tetun, Bahasa, Portuguese and Baikino. Tanya shared the shadow puppet story and the pictures from the children on Waiheke and encouraged the children of Ouecusse to draw story pictures in exchange. Upon returning to NZ these story pictures were taken back and shared with the Kindergarten children.
