How this story began

“The universe is made of stories, not atoms.”

(Muriel Rukeyser)

‘Once Upon An Island’ was founded in 2004 with the inaugural Waiheke Festival of Story. It was created by self-confessed story-o-phile and frock-o-holic Tanya Batt. In 2006 the Story Centre was opened as part of the Artworks Complex and in 2009 the Once Upon An Island Trust was established.

The guiding principal of the Trust is the exploration and development of human potential primarily through the mediums of story telling and story making. This is achieved through a series of workshops, performances and events for children and adults that are held at the Story Centre and at various locations through out the island.
